「週刊東都」の新米記者、沢田は新左翼運動への取材を通じて活動家たちに共感を抱きながらも、ジャーナリストとして客観性を保たなければならない立場との間に葛藤する日々を送っていた。1971年のある日、彼の所に活動家を名乗る梅山という青年が接触してくる。自分は「京西安保」の幹部であり、武装決起を起こすなどと語るその言葉は、いずれも真偽定かならぬものがあったが、宮沢賢治を愛読し、CCRの『雨を見たかい』をギターでつま弾く姿に、沢田は親近感を覚えていく。やがて梅山は学生仲間を引き込んで「赤邦軍」なる組織を作ると、自衛隊基地を襲撃して武器を奪うという計画を立てる。計画を明かされた沢田は自分に独占取材させてくれと頼み、事件に巻き込まれていくことになる。

I do have a B.S. degree in chemistry and do have a job title called ‘scientist’ now, but college is more than ten years ago and I am not in the profession of chemistry. Consider yourself warned. If checked under microscope, the crystal structure of sugar is distinctive (even to average minds like me), it is the fastest way to see if there is anything other than sugar (C6H12O6) in the mixture. The molecular formula C17H23NO3 could be acetoxyketobemidone, atropine, mesembrine, or hyoscyamine, which consist exactly the same group of molecules of C, H, N, O, but with different structures. Sherlock mentioned narcotics, so I think he had acetoxyketobemidone, a type of opioid, in mind. Then he tested if there is anything insoluble to water. Sugar is readily soluble, but narcotics are probably not. Finally, sulfuric acid (H2SO4) dehydrates the H2O’s in sugar so the slide turned brown, sulfuric acid may have reactions with C17H23NO3 too. I truly don’t know what’s going on with deuterium here. This is the reason I love her so much: I totally don’t understand what she said, but feel the sexiness in every word of hers. P.S. We don’t grantee the correctness above. Surely BBC have tons of consulting scientists at hand. Update There might be one reason why deuterium is listed here. A deuterium lamp is glowing in blue in the dark, and those GFP (green fluorescence protein) rabbits become green exposed to ultraviolet blue light. Maybe that’s what Sherlock is thinking (or, misleading us) during the testing.

Sherlock Is Judo Shodan Granted Don’t just watch Watson’s hand, look at the certification on the wall, that’s official Judo shodan (first rank) grade certificate for Sherlock Homes in 1965 (!!!, Showa 40). Here is the comparison with real one (second grade, 2000, Heisei 12): Update FYI, Lot of people also found other similar certificate (but it’s not the same one, the one on the wall has two additional kanji characters at the top right corner), saying the name should be “ジェフリィ・ディ・ベイシェ (Jeffrey D. Beish).” (Thanks, combatlauten!)

My wife went to Fashion Island Apple Store this evening, and left a note over there: Believe it or not, this is of personal importance. The man who loves me the most in the world, who had helped me purchasing my first Macintosh 11 years ago today (and we started dating right after), always dreams working for Apple and for Steve Jobs. For years we worked hard toward that dream. This week, my husband starts his job as an Apple engineer, but Mr. Jobs has left this world forever. Thank you for everything Steve. We will miss you. May you rest in peace. Sorry, but I’m crying again now.
